Spanish Study Break!

This past Thursday, December 5th, GHHS and LMSA paired to bring a Spanish Study Break to the JMC community!  The goal of the study break was to promote the use of the Spanish language by health care professions students to better serve the needs of our Spanish-speaking patients!  Students chatted, played games, and discussed health topics- all in Spanish!

The study break was a huge success with over 25 students participating!

Stay tuned for when the next Spanish Study Break will be!

November Golden Spotlight: JeffYES

November Golden Spotlight:  JeffYES!

Interested in working with adolescents? Check out JeffYES! YES (Youth Emergency Service) is a 30-day temporary shelter for displaced or run-away adolescents in Philadelphia. Jefferson students who participate in the JeffYES organization are involved in weekly outreach with the youth at YES. The main focus of Jefferson’s involvement at YES is to lead educational discussion groups on topics relating to self-esteem, goal-setting, and positivity, as well as other topics directly relating to adolescent lifestyles such as sexual health, relationships, etc. Over the past years, JeffYES has worked hard to establish a consistent presence at the shelter, and last year especially, JeffYES was able to get involved with projects such as a mural arts project to improve the YES living space. This year we have new efforts to expand our arts initiatives through creative writing and expression workshops and work with the teens in the area of visual arts. JeffYES meets on Tuesday evenings (our next meeting is Next Tuesday, November 12th from 6:30-7:30pm). For more information, please email jeffyes@jefferson.edu or talk to Sarah Capponi and Mollie Woehling.

October Golden Spotlight: Refugee Health Partners

October Golden Spotlight Group:  Refugee Health Partners!

Refugee Health Partners works closely with Dr. Marc Altshuler, Director of the Jefferson Center for Refugee Health and several local organizations to provide health and social services to Philadelphia's recently resettled refugee population. Current projects include two monthly student-run clinics in South Philadelphia, health screenings, educational workshops and ESL programs, urban gardening with refugee communities and case-management services for patients. Our future plans include opening a third health clinic for African refugees in North Philadelphia, organizing a college prep course for high school refugees, and establishing a series of clinical skills training sessions for lower-year Jefferson students. SERVICE DAY 2013!!!

On July 28, 2013, the JMC GHHS held its annual Service Day!  15 fourth year GHHS members and 48 (YES! FORTY-EIGHT) incoming first year students volunteered for this amazing event!

The event took place across 3 sites- the Refugee Health Partners Garden, Jefferson Square Park, and in JMC's own Lubert Plaza.

At the Refugee Health Partners Garden and Jefferson Square Park, volunteers helped with gardening and landscape maintenance to help support the communities the garden and park serve!

In Lubert Plaza, volunteers held a field day for adolescents that are a part of the JeffYES program.  A fun time was had by all, including the volunteers (pictures below)!

Fourth Year Medical Students and GHHS members, Ryan Watson and Vanessa Mazandi are having a great time at the Service Day Field Day!

JMC GHHS President and Fourth Year Medical Student, Katie Piwnica-Worms participating in games with JeffYES adolescents at Service Day!

Morgan Greenfield, JMC GHHS Service Chair and Fourth Year Medical Student, was the main organizer of the 2013 Service Day!  Great job, Morgan!  Thank you for all of your hard work!
