2014 JMC Gold Humanism Honor Society Induction Ceremony

On March 28, 2014, members of the JMC GHHS gathered in the lobby of the Hamilton Building on the JMC campus for an amazing induction ceremony.  After opening remarks by Dr. Charles Pohl, JMC GHHS Advisor, and Katie Piwnica-Worms, the outgoing JMC GHHS President, a delectable meal was shared by all in attendance.

Dr. Susan Parks from JMC's Department of Family and Community Medicine, the Division of Geriatrics, and the Palliative Care Service was the Keynote Speaker for the event.

Dr. Ashley Burkart from the Department of Pathology, Anatomy & Cell Biology was honored as the faculty inductee. 

The following residents were honored: Mudit Gilotra, MD (Family Medicine), Christina Lindenmeyer, MD (Internal Medicine), Heather Abe, DO (Obstetrics and Gynecology), Matthew Demczko, MD (Pediatrics), Patricia Hansen-Figgs, MD (Psychiatry), and Christine Feldmeier, MD (Surgery).

Golden Spotlight Update: Groups Spotlighted in 2014

January: Jefferson Clowns for Medicine

The mission of Jefferson Clowns for Medicine is to spread some cheer to patients who may not have visitors, bring laughs to those feeling down due to their illness, and to make everyone smile. Every Friday, Jefferson Clowns for Medicine visits Thomas Jefferson University Hospital to provide laughter to the hospital’s patients, doctors and nurses. We know that laughter provides a therapeutic value to patients in ways that neither medicine nor surgery can. It is therefore our privilege to provide some corny jokes, laughs, wacky costumes and good times to all!

Along with our constant work in Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Jefferson Clowns for Medicine has visited the Sacred Heart Hospice Home in Northern Philadelphia, Jefferson Relay for Life, and plans to visit the JeffHOPE ACTS Halloween Kids Party to spread cheer beyond the hospital.


February: JeffMentors

Jeff Mentors pairs students from all health professions with identified at-risk youth from the Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs located in North Philadelphia. Striving to influence these children positively, we seek to provide leadership, guidance, and support via mentoring events throughout the year. In the past, these events have included: field days, book fairs, the Franklin Institute, the Camden Aquarium, and more. We hope to repeat all of these events this year because the kids we work with enjoyed them so much!



March:  TJU Colleges Against Cancer 

Each year our committee raises funds and awareness to save lives from cancer. By teaming up with The American Cancer Society we plan and host fundraising, educational, celebratory, remembrance, and community-building events throughout the year. Such activities include trips to Hope Lodge to spend time with cancer patients and their families, bake sales and raffles to fundraise for cancer research, and lunchtime talks to educate our community on a variety of cancers and their prevention. Our efforts culminate in our exciting Relay For Life event that will take place this year on March 22nd, 2014. During this event, teams celebrate their year-long fundraising efforts, remember those that we have lost to cancer, honor those who fight or have fought the battle, and fight back against cancer.

Solidarity Week Continues! Night Staff Appreciation!

On the evening of February 18th, students from JMC GHHS surprised the night nursing staff at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with doughnuts and coffee as a thanks for all of their continuous hard work and compassionate patient care during their night shifts at TJUH!  A large number of GHHS members participated and hospital staff members throughout the hospital were extremely grateful!

Solidarity Week 2014: JeffCHAT on February 17th

Continuing Solidarity Week 2014, a JeffCHAT session was held on February 17th with the topic "Dealing with Ethical Situations".  A multidisciplinary panel of students from various health professions participated in the student-only monthly event based on the Schwartz Center Rounds.

Solidarity Week: Death Over Dinner

This evening, twenty JMC medical students from all four years met for dinner. . .and to talk about death.  Topics such as remembering loved ones who have passed, improving end-of-life care in the USA, barriers that prevent us from having end-of-life care discussions, and visualizing one's own death were discussed.  Over a potluck dinner, views were offered, challenged, and evolved.  A great time was had by all!  Thank you to everyone who participated for offering your thoughts and your cuisine!  Also, thank you to JMC GHHS Vice President, David Tuke, for offering his home as a gathering place!

February 14th- National GHHS Solidarity Day and the Kick-off to Jefferson's GHHS Solidarity Week!

In honor of the National GHHS Solidarity Day, Jefferson's Chapter GHHS has decided to expand the notion of standing in solidarity for compassionate care for patients into a full week of activities!  On February 14th, National Solidarity Day, Jefferson GHHS Members went to the Surgical Family Waiting Room at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and spent time talking with families and passing out surgery waiting room "survival packs", consisting of drinks, snacks, and inspirational quotes to help the families pass the time while waiting for the loved ones to be out of surgery.


Additionally, February 14th marked the date of the Jefferson Medical College JeffHOPE Ball!  JeffHOPE is the nation's largest student-run free clinic for the uninsured and homeless.  Part of the ball includes a silent auction in which the Jefferson chapter of GHHS donated an item to help raise funds in solidarity with JeffHOPE for the amazing compassionate care it provides to the city of Philadelphia.  The auction item included two tickets to the award-winning Broadway musical "Mamma Mia!" and a dinner cooked before the meal by Jefferson GHHS President, Katie Piwnica-Worms, and Secretary, Bobby McClowry.

Golden Service Award: Medical Assistance 101 & The Affordable Care Act- January 14, 2014

On January 14, 2014, Lev Malevanchik, one of our Golden Service Awardees put on a very informative presentation by Maripat Pileggi from Community Legal Services and Jarett Beaudoin from the Nationalities Service Center.  The talk was very well-attended by JMC Medical students from all four years.  The speakers did a phenomenal job presenting helpful information that we as medical students and future health care providers can utilize to help our patients get quality care!
